The latest CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner and certainly one of the most exciting young designers on the scene today, Alexander Wang, showed his collection to a packed house which included notables like Anna Wintour, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zoe Kravitz, and former model-muse Erin Wasson.
His collection was inspired by the 1992 “Batman Returns” film and with an abundance of form-fitting black looks that came through loud and clear. That said, the end of the show featured a number of looks which incorporated bra detailing that was very reminiscent of eighties Madonna/Jean Paul Gaultier, but with a harder edge.
Overall the collection was sexy, sleek, and a lot more tailored than one might have expected. A number of the pieces featured cut-out details (notably on pants), a trend we’re seeing starting to emerge this season. This is a collection clearly meant for the young, fabulous, and slim – especially the off-the-shoulder looks and those that had leathers fringed with foxtails.
Wang has truly found a way to turn basics into powerful statements and his looks were styled beautifully with matching accessories – including bold sterling silver pieces, sky-high booties, studded bags, and belts that were fierce.
His collection’s signature studded handbag, in fact, which will retail for $850 and has already been seen on Mary-Kate Olsen, might well just be Fall’s new “it” bag – a fete for a designer who last year only showed five handbags.
