When it comes to magazine covers, the buzz these past few days has been all about the latest issue of French Elle.
While the American Elle cover with Drew Barrymore has clearly been re-touched, France’s Elle has come-out with eight covers each of which feature an un-retouched European beauty (including Sophie Marceau, Ines de la Fressange, Eva Herzigova, and Charlotte Rampling). The one getting the most attention, however, has been the one featuring stunner Monica Bellucci in a white Christian Dior cashmere sweater. In addition to not being re-touched, the ladies on the cover are not wearing any makeup.
The makeup claim can be debated, since the magazine’s editor in chief Isabelle Maury said that they kept the photo-shoot ritual to which stars are accustomed to so that each underwent tradition hair and makeup, but all the makeup was then removed with lotion.
The covers were shot by Peter Lindbergh, who noted in the magazine that the lotion captures the light and gives the face its life. Given that makeup was applied, it’s debatable whether or not some smidges of lipstick and foundation stayed. Whatever the case, these covers make powerful statements through the mere fact of not being Photoshopped.
The 16 page cover feature is titled “Stars Without Makeup” and includes 11 black and white photos.
