With his Resort 2011 collection, Salvatore Ferragamo creative director Massimiliano Giornetti once again shows that he knows how to please the brand’s core customer while staying true to his own aesthetic. The resulting looks are conservative with just a hint of discreet, yet pulled together, edginess.
As the long time creative force behind Ferragamo menswear, the Giornetti knows his target customer – her needs, her limits, and her lifestyle. While he hasn’t been the head of womenswear for long (he took over the collection from Cristina Ortiz after the 2010 spring summer collection), he is clearly taking the house in the right direction.
The designer’s 2011 collection offered a mix of quintessential resort wear through crisp, fitted tops, tailored to perfection blazers, and loosely draped trousers. Everything was punctuated with discreet notes of casual sexiness that, at times, referenced Gucci, Chloe, as well as Celine – especially given the tan, off-white, brown, beige, and burned yellow color palette. This was particularly true for fitted glistening tan leather jackets and high-waisted cream pants with a trompe l’oeil-type finishing on the top, and a slew of belts reminiscent of the Gucci’s signature horse bit.
Nautical touches via white and navy patterned pieces helped hit the resort message home.
The one baffling point of the collection was the pants, which were tailored to perfection with the exception of the bottoms, which were not hemmed.
Clearly this was intentional, but the extra-long length gave the put-together looks an unfinished feel that they could have done without.
Clothing aside, the accessories were the real star of the collection – timeless structured handbags with contrasting trim, gorgeous clutches, and slender belts.
