Capping off the first official day of Fashion Week was arguably the week’s most hotly anticipated event – the re-opening of the Chanel Soho Boutique, hosted by Chanel and creative director Karl Lagerfeld.
After being closed for nearly a year, the boutique opened its doors to countless celebrities, models, fashion photographers, and influencers including Karl Lagerfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Kruger, Blake Lively, Liv Tyler, Lynn Wyatt, Chanel Iman, Rachel Bilson, Erin Wasson, Jessica Stam, Lauren Santo Domingo, Grace Coddington, Julia Restoin, Brad Goreski, and Sally Singer.
Going all out, Chanel blocked off the blocks around the boutique with LED screens inviting guests to faux graffiti with Chanel “spray can” bottles while treating them to caviar, foie gras, and lobster hors d’oeuvres.
I’m not sure how Chanel swung getting the city to agree to them blocking off the two streets, but it was perfect – not only did it prevent the party from getting too claustrophobic, but we all know how much the fashion crowd loves their cigarette breaks, and this provided ample room for just that.
Inside the boutique, Alexa Chung DJ’d the event (though you would have been hard pressed to hear the beats, which were kept relatively low), providing a fittingly chic backdrop to the new Peter Marino-designed space.
Inspired by local Soho artists, the space includes a number of artworks by such names as Gregor Hildebrandt, Alan Rath, and Peter Belyi, which were specially commissioned for the black-and-white store, which is now 25 percent larger than its previous iteration.
The sleek shop stocks the house’s full collection of ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes, sunglasses, fragrance, and beauty. An exclusive python bag style was crafted for the store, and it comes in red, gray, or brown and is topped off with a tassel. Matching shoes are also for sale. Lucky for those at the event who didn’t swipe their Amex cards to the tune of $4,900 for the special handbag, no one left empty handed – upon exiting, guests made away with a silk polar bear-printed scarf in line with the Fall/Winter 2010 Chanel collection.
While the boutique opening was invite-only, come Fashion’s Night Out, the public is invited to come in, check-out the space, and get the latest “it” nail polishes created by Global Creative Director of Chanel Make-up, Peter Philips.
Titled Les Khakis de Chanel, the collection includes three Le Vernis Nail Colours: Khaki Rose, Khaki Brun, and Khaki Vert. They’ve been designed to be worn alone or combined – though be forwarned, given the weeks of buzz these polishes have generated, you had better act fast before they sell out. Even if you leave empty handed, we guarantee you won’t regret checking out the space – 10-foot acrylic bottle of Chanel No.5 and all.
