One of the most highly anticipated shows of the week, Topshop Unique showcased its Autumn/Winter collection to a large, selective audience. Unique is Topshop’s progressive collection, produced since 2001 and now in its seventeenth season. Celebrities such as Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe attended and watched the show, lusting after the gorgeous pieces featured in this season’s collection, which I’m sure we’ll all be coveting come autumn.

“A collection of intergalactic and grunge-fused pieces descend upon Unique Autumn/Winter 09 for an almighty fashion odyssey”

Topshop Unique hit the bull’s eye on this collection. Powerful, angular silhouettes are reminiscent of sci-fi films. Star Wars and Star Trek are unlikely stimuli, but form inspiration for a fashion forward collection, featuring figure hugging body conscious dresses and leggings, and exposed zip dresses and jackets. Oversized shoulders and geometric armour-esque panelling, pin tucking and pleating emphasize the design, creating strong silhouettes and interesting looks.

To bring the underlying grungy undertones into the limelight, metallic leather is fused, slashed and twisted and waxed body conscious denim is heavily stitched. The invasion continues, with fabrics printed with astronomical imagery and ideas. Spaceships fly over silk dresses, knitted ponchos, angular belts and a crop-circle inspired diamante embellished playsuit.

Oversized knitwear created a glorious contrast in texture to a palette of stone and taupe. The stone and taupe colour scheme was highlighted with pops of yellow and contrasted with textured tops teamed with drainpipe trousers. Green sequined trousers were a subtle salute to alien life, and were tucked into lame socks and chunky, high heeled combat boots.

But who are we invading? The nomads of course.

Tribal attributes, inspired by nomadic communities, are featured in the collection. Shaggy, hair-like textured capes and anoraks were teamed with harem-style shell suits and leather Lycra.

Leather bags in metallic shades were used to accessorize the outfit, and were particularly striking with three dimensional pyramids and metal wrist straps. Necklaces and clutch bags were acid yellow, cobalt blue and coral.

Overall, Topshop Unique has presented us with a collection with interesting stimuli and innovative design. From the loose knit Rodarte-esque jumper, to the hiking boot-esque foot wear, this collection will be highly sought after, typical to Topshop Unique collections.
