We thought that we would be saying goodbye to Gucci creative director Frida Giannini in a few weeks, but it looks like the designer will be packing her bags at the Italian fashion house much sooner. WWD reports that Giannini was asked to leave the label on Friday.

Giannini was due to show her final men’s collection for the brand on January 19 and was originally set to depart Gucci after showing her last women’s collection for the label in Milan at the end of next month. Sources say that Gucci let her go early in order to facilitate finding a successor. Rumor has it that Gucci is looking to promote one of its own as a replacement, head accessory designer Alessandro Michele. Other names have been whispered since the initial announcement of Giannini’s departure, including Emilio Pucci’s Peter Dundas and Joseph Altuzarra.

Gucci has already chosen Marco Bizzarri, parent company Kering’s former head of luxury couture and leather goods, to replace former CEO Patrizio di Marco.
