Celebrity Trendspotting: Cap-Sleeve Dresses

You might be used to seeing cap-sleeves featured on baby tees more often than on chic dresses, but lately celebs have been baring arms in frocks fitted with the just-over-the-shoulder sleeve. The style works the strong shoulder trend, creating the illusion of a broadened shoulder. Perhaps the tiny sleeve is a non-committal nod to the transition to fall weather, but with Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, and other celebs appearing in stylish cap-sleeve dresses, it’s clear that the look is one to watch.

Alexander McQueen may just be behind for the cap-sleeve trend; Anne Hathaway looked gorgeous in a white lace cap-sleeve gown from the designer’s Resort 2012 collection at the London premiere of One Day. At the premiere of The Devil’s Double, Rosamund Pike donned another cap-sleeve look from McQueen’s Fall RTW line, with structured shoulders, a thin silver belt, and slits at the thighs. The blue jacquard butterly cap-sleeve dress that Khloe Kardashian wore to the HPNOTIQ Harmonie launch party in NYC was also by the designer.

The cap-sleeve puts a fresh spin on retro-inspired looks. Claire Danes rocked the cap-sleeve in a beaded white L’Wren Scott sheath at the premiere of Homeland. Jamie King looked sweet and simple in a cap-sleeve lace dress from the Banana Republic Mad Men capsule collection at an event in Hollywood. At a special screening of Meek’s Cutoff in NYC, Michelle Williams looked mod in a shift from the Chanel Spring/Summer 2011 collection which featured black sequined cap-sleeves.

Two chic cap-sleeve looks were spotted at the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup Polo Final. DJ Leigh Lezark wore a paneled dress with barely-there cap-sleeves by Peter Pilotto while actress Tamsin Egerton looked lovely in a Jonathon Saunders frock with a dramatic center cut-out, pleated tennis skirt and cap-sleeves.
