If one were to describe the Viktor & Rolf girl this season, she would be somewhere between club kid, cupcake, and frill-necked lizard.
While the recession may have taken a bite out of designer’s budgets this season, it missed the designers of Viktor & Rolf and hit the dresses – literally. Candy-colored cupcake dresses were seemingly too good to be true, as they were shown with large chunks missing.
Conceptual geniuses Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are not known for their restraint, and this season they took an unembellished perspective when approaching the economy – but that was the only thing unembellished. Jackets and shirts were framed with a crown of tulle, and draped trousers were scattered with appliqué.
All together, it sounds like too much – but shockingly, the pair showed a collection that was the best of both worlds, presenting somewhat wearable separates alongside the show-stopping confections.
Top it off with a pregnant Róisín Murphy perched to the side of the runway singing new work, and this season’s presentation can definitely be called an overall sensation. A clear vision and the courage to execute it may be the key to lasting and consistent success.
