The Misses Way Outnumber the Hits at Milan Fashion Week Spring 2022
Milan Fashion Week Spring 2022 is a wrap. Now it’s on to Paris. Fortunately, we were treated to an (almost) endless amount of showstopping moments.
Alberta Ferretti kicked things off with a collection full of feminine charm and casual elegance. At Fendi, Kim Jones took us all the way back to the disco era. Fausto Puglisi reworked Roberto Cavalli’s signature tiger print, while Ian Griffiths at Max Mara gave us an offering inspired by Françoise Sagan. Alberto Caliri took over the reins at Missoni with a 90s-filled showcase.
Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons made fashion history by simultaneously showcasing two shows in Milan and Shanghai. Dua Lipa made her runway debut at Versace. The noughties are back and better than ever at Dolce & Gabbana. Meanwhile, Giorgio Armani proved once again he’s the king of Italian fashion.
Donatella Versace and Jones switched roles with the former designing a mini Fendi collection and the latter serving up a fresh spin on Versace giving us a collaboration we never knew we wanted. Of course, it helps that the show featured runway legends, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Amber Valletta.
Here are all the hits and misses of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2022 according to our unfiltered forum members.
HIT: Alberta Ferretti
"I really enjoyed the collection, feels very breezy, which is just what you want for spring. This collection just screamed beach and sun and summer and I love it!" [Ruito]
"The color palette is absolutely delightful and brimming with glamour!" [GERGIN]
"Always had an immense soft spot for Alberta Ferretti and this collection does indeed feel like a breezy and season-appropriate collection. The color palette is divine!" [vogue28]

MISS: Jil Sander
"I hate oversized, why does everything have to be oversized these days?" [liberty33r1b]
"Depressing. Shapeless, oversized is not in the spirit of Jil’s minimalism." [Phuel]
"So tired of this. I gave Luke and Lucie Meier a chance, I really did, and was willing to back them. However, this latest showing proves they have absolutely nothing to contribute to the legacy of the house." [Fulton St Critique]

HIT: Giorgio Armani
"Of all collections I’ve seen so far, this truly looks like luxury." [Norden]
"You can never go wrong with Armani. I love everything. His clothes always look so ethereal, it's like a breath of fresh air." [avonlea002]
"Armani's signature jackets are always beautifully made." [WAVES]

"Yet again Jones proves that he brings absolutely nothing of value to the womenswear design landscape." [Frederic01]
"There’s no distinction with him. Ever." [Phuel]
"I get that the prints were done in a collaboration with the archives of Antonio Lopez, but everything here is extremely literal and heavy-handed. The prints are unfortunately the worst part of the collection." [perhydrol]
See all the looks from the Fendi collection.
"I was hooked once I saw the opening look, Missoni is fantastic when it does sexy!" [GERGIN]
"Very sexy! I love it." [charles01]
"Quite a few memorable looks here and definitely feels like a departure from previous seasons, which I can appreciate. The opening look is indeed strong, absolutely love that blue trench and the mad patchwork prints which oddly work extremely well with the minimalist silhouette." [vogue28]

"More of its horrible print fabrics..." [jeanclaude]
"These types of prints are so out of fashion..." [YohjiAddict]
"What's missing here is a few chain-mail dresses. Add them to this collection then voilà, we have a diluted Paco Rabanne." [THD96]

HIT: Versace x Fendi
"I honestly enjoyed it all. Yes there were lots of logos, but I like it. It was fun and unpretentious. The cast was also amazing and it’s interesting to see designers' takes on other brands." [charles01]
"This is incredibly creative and I'm surprised I actually like some of it! Very bold and daring of both of them to do this, you could tell they had fun in each other's worlds. Would LOVE to see more of this!" [Joromana]

"I'll take nada, please." [aracic]
"This is not Prada. This is CK by Raf Simons. And a very weak collection. Where's the fashion, the design, the creativity? I don't see it." [guimon]
"You can always count on them when in need of a good laugh." [avonlea002]

"I like the Dsquared2 bad-girl-gone-good vibes here. So unexpected and fresh..." [vetements]
"I actually like this. I like them going against the grain..." [Lola701]
"I like it, it's different from the other brands and after Versace's orgy of turn-of-the-millennium nostalgia this feels like a relief with its subdued palette and grunge styling..." [YohjiAddict]

MISS: Dolce & Gabbana
"There are looks which are literally clones from their early 2000s collections, but now everything here looks cheap and dated." [jeanclaude]
"Just when you think that their last collection is the worst collection ever, this season they said 'we can do worse'. It's like they set a goal to outdo themselves each season." [THD96]

"It's so sad because Versace is one of my favorite brands, but it's become a repetitive boredom at this point. SAD!" [DK92]
"For someone who talks so much about love and respect for Gianni, Donatella seems to have no problem with tarnishing his legacy. It's so meaningless, just sloppy merchandise diluted to the maximum. No one is going to remember this in a few days." [avonlea002]
"She's just making...clothes." [FelipeV]

MISS: Max Mara
"Sorry, this looks like some leftovers from DKNY at best." [THD96]
"There‘s literally nothing new, it‘s so boring." [liberty33r1b]
"Meh Mara!" [jeanclaude]

"Big disappointment!" [YohjiAddict]

"Sinfully ugly." [dior_couture1245]
"I see Gaultier, Comme des Garçons, but where’s Marni?" [Lola701]
"What is the purpose of sabotaging a niche brand that is not even a household name or historical house?" [JohannesL]

"Clothes nobody will ever wear or buy... A total waste of resources." [Lola701]
"It's not Milan without some very bland, brown and beige shows." [YohjiAddict]

MISS: Emilio Pucci
"The minimal approach for this brand looks weird and out of place." [jeanclaude]
"Someone has watched the latest Courrèges shows too many times. Unfortunately, the minimal look doesn't work at all for Pucci." [perhydrol]
"What are those sandals? Are they for dusting the floors?" [susseinmcswanny]

MISS: Roberto Cavalli
"Someone needs to remind Fausto Puglisi that Mr. Cavalli's legacy is so much more than some tacky animal prints." [THD96]
"The search results for 'Versace' on AliExpress... That print of the tiger's face is the single tackiest thing this fashion month so far..." [YohjiAddict]
"I don't know what was worse with this show, the complete lack of energy or the collection itself. Cavalli used to be tacky, but his women were full of passion and in charge of their sexuality." [perhydrol]

MISS: MM6 Maison Margiela
"This all looks like Gareth Pugh rejects, which is the last thing I expected..." [YohjiAddict]
"Where is Margiela here?" [jeanclaude]
"I wish they had toned it down a bit with the check print..." [Nomar]
See all the looks from the MM6 Maison Margiela collection.
"Really outdated, trendy, wannabe stuff. Kinda cringe." [susseinmcswanny]
"This owes way too much to John Galliano's Dior. Some of these looks are straight out of the Fall 2000 ready-to-wear collection." [dior_couture1245]
"I couldn’t get past the first two minutes of the collection. Horrid. I understand the nostalgic angle and the Galliano/Cavalli references are justified, but it feels so…trashy." [Fulton St Critique]
See all the looks from the Blumarine collection.
MISS: Philipp Plein
"If I was D&G I'd sue!" [RedSmokeRise]
"He's truly in a competition with D&G to reach the lowest of the low when it comes to generic collections lacking in any sort of taste..." [YohjiAddict]
